Cassidy and Carter call the missing FEMA money a disaster for Louisiana – but they still want to take your Medicaid!
As of today, April 9, 2025, President Donald Trump steals $721 Million in Disaster Relief from Louisianans, calling it “wasteful and ineffective.”
The decision comes from Trump terminating the law he signed in 2020 that provides FEMA money for disaster relief. The law, Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC) program, offsets natural disaster costs to residents. Accordingly, the BRIC program pays for building levees, raising homes, and flood prevention here in Louisiana.
Since Trump first signed BRIC into law, President Biden increased its funding. Before changes were made this week, the $2.03 billion in funds would be available through 2025.
Further, Biden signed The American Relief Act of 2025 (P.L. 118-158). It provided a $28 billion boost to cover the costs of major disasters and was available until March 14, 2025. Yet, the money disappeared this week under the Trump Administration. As a result, 140 current applications for disaster funding will be ignored.
In sum, Trump’s taking of $721 million in approved projects for climate resilience in Louisiana is effective immediately. Those funds, if made available, will be put to good use. In 2021, when BRIC was signed into law, Hurricane Ida caused $55 billion in damage to the state.
Senator Cassidy and Representative Troy Carter say the broken funding promise will devastate the state.
And yet, Cassidy voted to cut Medicaid by $880 billion
Finally, even though the two recognize the need for disaster funding, Senator Cassidy is eager to cut other programs, such as Medicaid. Just last week, he announced the cuts in a video but tried to make them seem less severe. The truth is—he voted to cut Medicaid benefits by $880 billion.
It is up to voters to ensure our representatives act in their favor.
